Network Like An MBA (vA)
Ever experience this before? Sweaty palms and awkward eye contact while trying desperately to find a common subject? That’s how it feels to network. I’m here to help you become more comfortable.
Initial process
- List the industries you’re interested
- Identify corresponding networking events
- Research potential people who you would be interested to talk if you can get the attendee list
- Show up early to talk to influencers before they get crowded
How to overcome shyness
- Ask questions and listen; look for commonalities
- Understand that rejection is part of the process
- Quickly decide on your intention with this encounter, such as asking for an introduction or help with a job search
- Practice by attending as many networking events as you can
General tips
- Wait until someone finishes a thought before joining a conversation with a relevant comment to an existing conversation
- Send follow-up emails with a quick overview of your conversation, including a personal takeaway
- Wear name badge on the right side of your chest; it’s more visible when you shake hands
- Smile
- Write conversation highlights on the back of their business card
- Repeat their names during conversation
The purpose is to help each other succeed. You may not be able to help the person now, but you never know how you can help the person in the future. As cliché as the saying goes, pay it forward. All of my jobs have been obtained through networking, and I always try to help anyone I can.
